“Tu B’Shevat is here, the Jewish Arbor Day…”

Dear Friends,

” Hail the tree’s new year, happy holiday”

That tune from my youth always creeps into my head when I know Tu B’Shevat is coming. But instead of thinking about the tune, my mind goes to the seven species that are represented at this holiday’s seder.

The first tree that blooms in Israel is the almond tree so almonds play a significant role in food preparation.  Figs, grapes, pomegranates, dates, wheat and barley round out the seven foods traditionally eaten.

Explore my site and find some new dishes that you can prepare to add to your own holiday tradition.  Stir-Fried Chicken with Almonds in Hoisin Sauce incorporates the almonds and pays homage to the Jewish communities that flourished in parts of China beginning in the Middle Ages.

If you like Babaganoush you will love Syrian Smoked Eggplant with Pomegranate Molasses and another of the seven species will find their way onto your table!

And, if you are looking for some hearty dish to stave off February’s cold weather, then look no further than my Mushroom Barley Soup which is always a great hit (and good for Souper Bowl!)
